OneOak Design is co-chairing its monthly peer-to-peer networking group sponsored by BCTIA. The group is an open table conversation on topics that are directly related to the world of Product Design & Development and is open to all BCTIA members. This month’s topic is “Crowdfunding: Its Effect on Design & Innovation”.

Jump over to the BCTIA website to sign-up and join us for this months conversation about crowdfunding.

If you’re not a BCTIA member, or you can’t make it but might be interested in more information on the crowdfunding trend we’d love to hear from you. How do you think Crowdfunding will affect product development moving forward? Lastly, how will you navigate the new Kickstarter guidelines?

The following is what will be happening next week:

Crowdfunding: Its Effect on Design & Innovation

Crowdfunding has the ability to democratize ideas. Professional designers and garage inventors alike now have a channel for gauging the validity of their idea and raising funds to make it a reality. Canada has been slow to jump on the crowdfunding bandwagon, but there is no question that websites like Kickstarter.com, rockethub.com, and indiegogo.com are here to stay. The questions we seek to gain some insight on during this month’s PD&D session is to figure out the effect crowdfunding sites will have on the design and innovation process.

Is crowdfunding good or bad for innovation?

Are Kickstarter’s recent changes that mandate functional prototypes going to help or hurt the cause?

These questions and more will be discussed in hopes of learning more about the crowdsourcing movement and the effect it might have on our industry.

Machine to Machine (M2M) is quite the hot topic these days. M2M as a technology has been around since the dawn of the transistor. Even though it is already pervasive in its reach, it hasn’t been until the last 5 or so years that we’ve seen hockey stick growth that is making everyone talk about it like it is something new. Many experts are making predictions about the placement of M2M capabilities into virtually every kind of product we own. This demand for network capability everywhere we look is driving year-over-year growth of 24% or more.
If you question that virtually every product we come into contact with is adopting M2M capabilities, consider that products as mundane and mechanical as refrigerators are beginning to have networking capabilities built into them so you can adjust their settings remotely. Similarly the world of the automobile is poised to become the next wireless hub in our lives. The products that are beginning to adopt M2M as part of their future capabilities are endless. Our team here at OneOak is led by designers who have been developing products with M2M integration for nearly two decades. We understand the details and pitfalls required to successfully integrate M2M into your next product or service.
Specifically, we are well-versed in the following areas of M2M Solution Implementation:

Wireless Integration including telemetry and environmental controls

Research, Development, and Commercialization of new Innovative M2M Solutions for vertical markets

Certifications and other often overlooked items that slow your product from being fully manufacturable and export ready

Engineering development with a deep understanding of the pitfalls that can be encountered within tightly integrated systems encased in a single enclosure (e.g. wireless/smartphone)

If you or someone you know is convinced that M2M is part of your company’s future, but you need help with how to take advantage of this multi-billion dollar development trend, you can get in touch with us in one of the following ways:
