The Sherpas of M2M Development
In the process of product development, everyone talks about the big prize. Getting your product out the door and stuffing the flag on the top of the peak. The glamour shot is always on the peak. You even have the stories of the treacherous climb up the face of the mountain. The reality is that for those parts of the story to occur there’s as much if not more work that has to occur to just get the base of the mountain. Even with “simple” climbs like Mt. Kilimanjaro, there is a four day long slog along a well trodden path before you reach the steep ascent up to the peak. The trip to the peak occurs in about four hours in contrast to the four days of walking to the ascent.
Strategy and planning for an M2M product is the four day journey towards the climb. It isn’t the heavy lifting, blood, sweat, and tears that makes for the dramatic storyline. It is more often than not the make or break phase of a program. To continue the mountain analogy, you can’t helicopter in to the big climb because the air is too thin to fly. Trying to short cut your way to the base can cause altitude sickness, not to mention countless other unforeseen problems.The same goes for technology product development.
Nobody has a crystal ball. Even the best Sherpas can’t predict the perfect storm brewing over the horizon. You will notice, though, to get to the peak there is always a guide along the way to point the way to the top. Someone who has been there before and knows the route that is most likely to illicit success.
